Certified textiles explained: GOTS and OEKO-TEX
GOTS is a standard for organic textiles covering the whole processing chain, while OEKO-TEX labels such as Standard 100 test finished textile products for harmful substances. Ask for valid certificates that cover the factory and product.
What they cover
GOTS covers organic fibre content and processing criteria. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests products for specified harmful substances.
Check the proof
Ask for the certificate number and scope, and verify it with the issuing body. Certification of a fabric mill does not automatically cover every garment made from it. Only claim certifications you can document.
FAQ
Is OEKO-TEX the same as organic?
No. It is about substance testing, not organic fibre.
Who verifies a certificate?
The issuing certification body, through its public database.
